A Guide to Learner Driver Insurance

How does the BSM Marmalade Learner Insurance policy work?

The policy is designed to sit alongside your existing motor policy and provides fully comprehensive cover whilst the learner driver is practising driving in your car.

Should any claim arise whilst the learner driver is driving, the claim is made on the provisional licence holder's insurance policy and does not affect your own policy or your No Claims Bonus.

What type of cars can be covered by the BSM Marmalade Learner Insurance policy?

Our Learner Driver Insurance allows you to insure most cars providing they are in insurance group 32 or less and have a current market value of less than £30,000.

Am I the only person who can supervise the driving practice?

No. Any driver who is over 25, who currently holds a valid full UK driving licence and has done for at least three years, can supervise the learner driver's practise. It need not be the person who owns the car.

Can I insure more than one learner driver to practise in my car?

The policy covers a named driver only. If you have more than one learner currently learning to drive, you can take out a policy for each driver.

How much does a provisional driver insurance policy cost?

The cost of cover depends on the length of policy you choose and where you live; you can get a personal quote for your cover here.

What is the excess if we need to make a claim?

If the car is involved in an accident, is set on fire or is stolen , you will need to pay the first £250 towards any claim.

Can we change our minds?

We hope you are happy with the cover this policy provides. However, you have the right to cancel it within 14 days of receiving the policy documents or the start of the policy, whichever is later without giving any reasons. If that happens, we will refund the premium; first deducting payment for the period of time you have been on the policy and a £10 cancellation charge.

After this time, you can cancel the policy at any time and receive a refund for any full period of 30 days cover which are outstanding; less a £10 cancellation charge. There is no refund of any part months left on the policy.

What happens when the learner passes their driving test?

When the learner passes their test, all cover under the provisional licence policy ceases immediately. If the learner is going to continue driving your car, you will need to add them as a named driver to your own policy. If the learner passes their driving test sooner than you expect, you can have a refund on any unused period of 30 days cover, subject to an cancellation charge of £10.

The next step is Young Marmalade - the combined car purchase and low cost insurance scheme for young drivers.

Who provides the insurance cover?

The policy is underwritten by Zenith Marque Insurance Services Limited. Zenith Marque is a specialist motor insurer at Lloyd's; focusing on private car, motor cycle and light commercial motor insurance.
